UPDATE: I found what cause this.
This is problem with template. If I change template to protostar example, everything worked well (images are shown and open window worked), but with your template shaper_helix3 not.

I am not sure why this happend, but template hide modal window and sets an absolute position.

yes just tested the same .. it is a template issue.
I overrided the .modal settings with suggested solution and now it works!!!
