Hi,

I am a total novice to Joomla. However, I would like a section in my BreezingForm whereby the user can search for a book by ISBN and upon clicking a custom submit button, to autopopulate additional text fields such as author, publisher, edition etc. from the Google Books API for instance.

I know there are extensions that can do this at the backend, but I am not sure how to make it happen on the front end through BreezingForms.

Not looking for a solution, but a nudge in the right direction would be a huge help.

Thank you,
Ian

Hi,

for another customer I am creating an example form to search for streetnames.
This should be able to be used for any other thing as long as the search data is coming from the same storage where the form submissions are stored.

That bringe me to my question: do you need to connect to some existing db table or service that returns the books based on the isbn or are you going to add these yourself?

Regards,
Markus

Hi Markus, thanks very much for your reply,

What I would like is for the user to be able to search by ISBN, and for that search to connect to a service (e.g. the Google Books API or there are others such as Amazon), and autopopulate several other fields based on what it finds (e.g. author etc.). Upon submitting the form, this book, along with other details, would be added to my database.

A second form, elsewhere on the website, would perform a search within my database.

So in the first instance I think I am looking for the search to connect to a service, in answer to your question.

Thank you again,
Ian

Hi,

attached is an example for that connects to Google Books API.
Please download, unzip and install the form in BF => Configuration => Package Installer.

It will then be available in Manage Forms to try out (example isbn: 0735619670)

The "magic" is happening in the ISBN field's => Advanced Tab => Action Script where I basically pull the data via ajax from Google's API.

The form pulls title, authors and description, but you can extend it and get more data from the response.

This is from Google Books API v1 and I don't know about their rate limits but it seems there is no authentication required.

Regards,
Markus
