We are seeing a steady stream of fake user registration attempts on our website, even when Google recaptcha is enabled, at the highest available free setting. Interestingly our other forms are not targeted though.

Is it possible to repurpose or simply modify our user registration form so that it would not link to user registration no longer? In our case we are not actually interested in creating new joomla user accounts on the website, but only want to let people to register themselves in our society. Initially the user registration template was chosen, but due to this fraudulent activity, perhaps a simple form would be a much better option for us. Any similar experiences / recommendations?

Hi,

basically, in the custom registration form the code for link of registration is located in form->Advanced->More options->Submit pieces->Before form.

So, maybe we can adjust it to your needs

Thanks! Yes I can see that the End Submit piece is set to Custom on that form. Shall I just revert it to None, would that do it?

Here's the update. So we have been running the same basic form with no registration active for over a month now, but still the same fraudulent attempts are coming in and flocking our system. Any further advice? Is it necessary to subscribe to the most secure invisible captcha ... and is that actually an effective measure against this? Or will the attacks still continue?

PS. Our current captcha is actually the very same one that is used right here in this forum..!

Hi,

it is always very difficult to be totally free from spam as soon as you offer online forms.

Crosstec uses recpatcha with high security parameter.
"High" works well, we receive probably 2-3 spam messages weekly in the forums despite 2000 - 4000 bots trying it daily.

Also, you can protect your site with Spambotcheck:
www.vi-solutions.de/en/joomla-plugin-plgspambotcheck
and you can integrate ProjectHoneypot.org
www.projecthoneypot.org/

Hope this helps
