Thank you again Mihaela
I will come back to your most recent reply but today I had to go back to absolute basics to try to understand how this is supposed to work. I have created a new form called testform that just has five elements - lname1, fname1, lname2, fname2 and email. I have created a testform_mailback.txt.php file copied from mailbacktpl.txt.php but removed the core form elements after formname. I put it into administrator/components/com_breezingforms/mailtpl and then tested it with 3 different options – Here are my findings
edit emails field resulting email
default full default email no elements missing
custom but nothing in the custom block - no email returned at all
custom – with short message - works properly
With no combination could I get the custom email template to be mailed to me. If my txt.php file is incorrect could you send me a corrected one or if it is misnamed - please just help me to get this very basic test working so I can understand what to expect and can simplify my testing. There must be something very basic that I am not doing correctly.

I am working on Joomla 3.9.13 with BF 1.9.0. Build 931. I should also say that I get no error messages in the console or in Joomla itself.

I am at my wits end here. I now have just the one file in my mailtpl directory - testform_mailback.txt.php, as attached, and I have run it through phpcodechecker.com and it shows no errors. I think I have determined that my setting to get a custom php mailback is to set edit emails to default because I do at least get a mailback then. If I set to custom, with, of course nothing in the editor box, I get no mailback.
HOWEVER, for both admin email and the mailback that I do get, they are both the default format (see attached) rather than my abbreviated format. Where could they be getting these from? and why do they not pick up testform_mailback.txt.php for the mailback?
Please reply. I am out of ideas of what could be in error. I have cleared cache before each test; I have watched the console for any errors; I have read your posts carefully. I also attach a png of CoreFTP showing the state of the mailtpl folder. Is there anything else I can send you or make available to you to help me solve this?
